Western Illinois University student account questions
What happens if I have an unpaid balance at Western Illinois University?
After the payment due date (Summer: June 28; Fall/Spring: after the 10th day of classes), WIU adds a 1% monthly finance charge to your unpaid balance. A financial hold will prevent you from registering for future semesters and will block transcript release. Graduating students with past-due accounts have their diploma withheld. If you are not enrolled in the next semester and your balance remains unpaid or unresolved for 90 days after the semester ends, your account may be submitted to the Illinois State Comptroller's Office (which can offset payroll or tax refunds), referred to a collection agency, and reported to TransUnion credit bureau. Contact Billing and Receivables at billings@wiu.edu or (309) 298-1831 to discuss your options.
What holds can prevent me from registering at Western Illinois University?
Several types of holds (called encumbrances) can block registration at WIU. Financial hold: if your past-due balance is $1,000 or more, contact Billing & Receivables at billings@wiu.edu or (309) 298-1831. Advisor hold: all undergraduate students must meet with their academic advisor each registration period before the hold is removed — find your advisor at wiu.edu/academicadvising/directory/. Immunization hold: provide proof of immunization to Beu Health Center. Registrar's hold: often means a missing official transcript — contact the Registrar at R-Office@wiu.edu or (309) 298-1891. Log in to STARS to see all active holds and the office to contact for each.
Where can I check my holds and account balance at WIU?
Log in to STARS at wiu.edu/stars. Under the Academic tab, select Registration to see any active encumbrances and which office to contact. Under the Financials tab, select Account Detail to view your current balance. Monthly billing statements are emailed to your @wiu.edu address with a link to view the full statement on STARS.
Does WIU offer a payment plan?
Yes. WIU partners with Transact to offer semester payment plans dividing your costs into 2–6 monthly installments (depending on enrollment deadline). There is a $30 non-refundable enrollment fee per plan. Payments are due on the 5th of each month. Enroll through STARS under the Financials tab or at commerce.cashnet.com/wiupay. Note: domestic card payments carry a 2.95% service fee and returned ACH payments are subject to a $25 fee.
