Northern Michigan University student account questions
What happens if I have an unpaid balance at Northern Michigan University?
Students with any financial obligation to NMU (including tuition, fees, housing, library fines, parking fines) may have a FinSvc Hold placed on their account by the Student Service Center. This hold can prevent registration, release of transcripts, diplomas, and other services. Accounts written off are transferred to a Debt Hold System and may be sent to a collection agency. The University reserves the right to withhold all services from persons with delinquent accounts. Contact the Student Service Center at ssc@nmu.edu or 906-227-1221 to resolve a financial hold.
What holds can prevent me from registering at NMU?
Registration holds at NMU include: FinSvc Hold (unpaid financial obligation — contact SSC at 906-227-1221), Adviser Hold (students under 18 credit hours or GPA below 2.00 must meet with their adviser), Academic Probation hold, First Year Experience hold, Orientation hold, Measles/Medical Hold (incomplete vaccination records), TLC Hold (unreturned laptop), and Disciplinary Hold (Dean of Students). Check your holds by logging into MyNMU → Student Services tab → Holds. The office that placed the hold is the only one that can remove it.
Who do I contact about billing and student accounts at NMU?
Contact the Student Service Center (SSC), NMU's one-stop office for billing, registration, and financial questions. Email ssc@nmu.edu, call 906-227-1221, or visit Suite 2201 C.B. Hedgcock. Hours: Mon–Fri 8:00am–5:00pm (Summer: 7:30am–4:00pm). View and pay your bill online at payment.nmu.edu/ebill. For financial aid questions, contact the Financial Aid Office at fao@nmu.edu or 906-227-2327.
How can I pay tuition or avoid the late fee at NMU?
Pay in full by the tuition due date (Fall: early-mid August; Winter: early January; Summer: mid-May) to avoid a $100 per-semester late fee. If you can't pay in full, enroll in the Easy Pay Plan ($50 service fee, 4 monthly installments) or the Deferral Payment Plan ($75 service fee, defers payment until financial aid is finalized). Both plans must be set up by the tuition due date via eBill at payment.nmu.edu/ebill. A $25 fee applies for each late installment within the plans.
